Macao to Zhuhai: Gongbei and Hengqin border-crossing guide
Start here
- For Gongbei, travel to Macao’s Border Gate (關閘); its usual opening hours are 06:00 to 01:00 the following day.
- For the former Lotus crossing route, use the Hengqin Port Macao area. Its pedestrian inspection hall is open 24 hours, while transport has separate operating hours.
- Check your mainland China entry permission before leaving Macao; permission to enter Macao does not establish eligibility to enter the mainland.
Owner’s experience: airport to Hengqin by LRT
SOURCE C / REPORTEDStore / traveller reportNON-OFFICIALThe site owner has used Macao LRT since its early operation and reports nearly ten journeys in total, including journeys before the Hengqin Line opened. The current airport-to-Zhuhai route is Airport station to Lotus, changing to the Hengqin Line and entering the mainland through Hengqin Port. The total does not represent ten journeys on this exact connection.
In the owner’s experience, this was faster and more convenient than taking a shuttle to Gongbei and crossing there. This is a personal comparison; actual waiting and journey times depend on the train connection, queues and onward destination.
The owner used Macau Pass for the LRT. Current fare and cash-payment rules are described separately below.
- After Macao entry and baggage collection, go to the LRT Airport station.
- Take the Taipa Line towards Barra and change at Lotus station.
- Take the Hengqin Line to Hengqin station, then follow signs to the port’s Macao departure inspection hall.
- Complete immigration and any Customs requirements before arranging mainland transport.
Macau Pass discounts and cash payment
The LRT operator allows a general Macau Pass to be tapped directly at gates at the ordinary electronic prepaid-card fare. Published ordinary prepaid fares are half the corresponding general single-journey ticket fare; the actual price depends on the journey and card type.
Cash acceptance differs by purchase location. Vending and add-value machines accept MOP cash only. Customer service centres accept MOP, HKD and RMB at a 1:1 rate, give change only in MOP and have coin and small-RMB-denomination restrictions; check the operator’s details before paying.
Check entry permission first
SOURCE AOfficial sourceCHINAMainland China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law requires foreigners entering China to present their passport or other international travel document and the applicable visa or entry permit for border inspection. Visa exemptions have their own conditions; verify the policy for your nationality, travel purpose, permitted port and itinerary with the official authority before travelling.
- Check your visa’s validity and remaining entries if you use a visa.
- Keep the original documents needed for Macao departure and mainland entry.
- Confirm the entry route before making a same-day return plan.

Route A: Border Gate to Gongbei
Do not assume e-gate eligibility from having a passport alone. If you have not confirmed registration and eligibility, ask staff for the appropriate manual lane. For repeated same-day crossings, check current restrictions with the authorities.
- Check the current port notice and arrange transport to Macao’s Border Gate.
- Follow the departure direction and complete Macao exit inspection using a lane for your document and eligibility.
- Continue along the marked passage to complete mainland entry inspection and any Customs formalities at Gongbei.
- After leaving the port, use your full Zhuhai destination address to arrange transport.
Route B: Hengqin, replacing the old Lotus crossing
SOURCE DOfficial sourceMACAOMacao’s 2020 announcement states that the former Lotus Port moved to the Hengqin Port Macao area. Use the current port destination. Arriving at Lotus LRT station does not complete the crossing.
- Reach the Hengqin Port Macao area. On the LRT, change at Lotus to the Hengqin Line and travel to Hengqin station.
- Follow the Macao-to-Hengqin direction in the inspection hall and ask which lane is appropriate for your passport.
- Complete both sides’ immigration requirements and any required Customs inspection or declaration.
- On the mainland side, arrange transport to Hengqin or your onward Zhuhai destination.
Mainland arrival-card preparation
SOURCE AOfficial sourceCHINANIA introduced online foreigner arrival-card completion from 20 November 2025. Use the official free service for the information required for your entry; completion of an arrival card does not grant a visa or entry permission. If you cannot complete it online, NIA says on-site equipment and paper cards remain available.

A 24-hour port does not mean 24-hour LRT
The LRT operator’s September 2026 timetable gives Hengqin Line service hours of 06:30–23:15 Monday to Thursday and 06:30–23:59 Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Check the departure timetable for your actual station and any temporary service changes.
Owner’s onward connection: Hengqin to Zhuhai station
SOURCE C / REPORTEDStore / traveller reportNON-OFFICIALAfter clearing Hengqin Port, the owner reports booking on 12306 and taking the Zhuhai–Airport intercity railway from Hengqin to Zhuhai station for the Gongbei area. The service used had no assigned seat. See the published service-specific rule below before relying on open seating.
- After completing mainland entry, follow signs for the mainland railway Hengqin station.
- Search 12306 for Hengqin to Zhuhai on your intended travel date; check the actual service and ticket conditions.
- Complete railway identity checks and security screening using the original booking document.
- At Zhuhai station, follow the route to the Gongbei area or your accommodation.
- The Macao LRT Hengqin station and mainland intercity Hengqin station are separate systems with port clearance between them.
- Check that the destination is Zhuhai, not Zhuhai North.
Open seating is service-specific
SOURCE AOfficial sourceCHINAA Hengqin government repost of the railway timetable announcement, dated 30 December 2024, says that from 5 January 2025 the line’s S-prefix services sell tickets without an assigned train or seat, under the stated same-day conditions. This helps explain the owner’s open-seating experience.
Check current 12306 and station information before travelling. This rule does not establish open seating on every C-, D- or G-prefix train; follow any train, carriage or seat assignment on your own ticket.

Continuing from Hengqin to other mainland areas
SOURCE AOfficial sourceCHINAHengqin’s official port guide distinguishes the Macao–Hengqin first line from the Customs second line between Hengqin and other mainland areas. Follow the declaration and baggage-inspection requirements when continuing beyond Hengqin; this is separate from the Macao departure procedure.
